From Overwhelmed to Hopeful: My Journey With Debt and Why I Started DebtDiaryMom

Hey there, I’m the voice behind DebtDiaryMom!

And like so many of you reading this, I never imagined I’d be here.
I never imagined I would be staring at overdue bills, juggling credit cards, and grieving losses that went far beyond money.

But this is my story. And this blog is my way of turning pain into purpose.

The Leap of Faith: Leaving My 9–5

For years, I lived the “safe” life: a 9–5 job, a predictable paycheck and the dream that one day I would do something more meaningful.
Finally, in 2024, I made the leap.

I quit my job with three months of emergency funds tucked away and a side business that was slowly but surely growing. I was excited, motivated and honestly a little proud…

I thought I had prepared well…

I thought I had done everything right…

When Life Happened

Not long after that leap, life threw me a curveball.

A difficult pregnancy left me physically limited, unable to move the way I needed to, unable to work the way I planned. My business slowed. My savings drained.

I watched my emergency fund shrink day by day until it was gone.

And then came the heartbreak I still carry: my beloved dog got poisoned. But with finances in crisis, I couldn’t bring him to the vet on time. He is no longer with us, not just because of illness, but because money wasn’t there when he needed me most.

That grief and guilt became one of my lowest moments.

The Rock Bottom

Soon after, the credit cards were maxed out. Bills piled up on the table. Every day felt like playing defense against debt collectors and overdue notices.

At the same time, my husband was restructuring his own entrepreneurial career. We were both trying to build, but instead of building wealth, we were building stress.

I often sat awake at night, calculating numbers over and over in my head, wondering how we would get through the month.

We had once dreamed about financial freedom. Now, we were simply trying to survive.

The Birth of DebtDiaryMom

DebtDiaryMom wasn’t born out of perfection or financial mastery. It was born out of desperation; a side attempt to bring in a little extra income and to hold myself accountable.

But over time, I realized something important:
I wasn’t alone.

So many women, especially stay-at-home moms, are silently carrying financial stress while also carrying their families.
We don’t talk about it enough. We don’t see enough honest stories.

This blog is my story, my experiments, my mistakes, and my lessons — shared openly so that you don’t have to feel alone in your journey.

My Mission: Hope, Not Perfection

This space isn’t about presenting a picture-perfect life. It’s about showing the messy middle.

  • How to budget when the bills are already overdue.

  • How to build an emergency fund from zero, even if it’s just $5 at a time.

  • How to use simple tools, like a zero-based budget or a debt snowball calculator, to make progress one small step at a time.

  • How to dream again about financial freedom and wealth creation, even if today feels impossible.

My mission is simple: to help women, especially moms, contribute financially to their households, reclaim control over their money, and build peace of mind for their families.

The Pet Corner — Dedicated to Him

I promised myself that my dog’s story would not be just a chapter of grief but a spark of something beautiful.

On DebtDiaryMom, you’ll find a small corner dedicated to him, through coloring books and storytelling for kids. Sometimes even a recipe tucked in. These projects are a way to:

  • Teach children lessons about love, responsibility and resilience.

  • Create joyful, affordable products for families.

  • Keep his memory alive in a way that inspires rather than hurts.

I couldn’t save him, but through this little corner, I hope to bring something meaningful to other families.

Where I Am Now

We are still on this journey. I don’t have a “happily ever after” debt-free story just yet.
But what I do have is momentum, tools and hope.

Every day, we chip away at the debt.
Every week, I try new methods to save or earn a little more.
And every month, I share it with you here, so that you know you have someone walking beside you.
